Te Kuiti SPCA gets tough on goat neglect , taken from the Waitomo news 16/5/2013 . What a great little SPCA branch!
TE KUITI North King Country
SPCA is serving notice it’s going to
take a tough line with anyone tethering
goats without adequate shelter,
water and food.
The warning comes after an inspector
responded to a public complaint
last week about a goat tied up, and
in very poor condition.
“We found the goat in a dreadful
state,” says branch president Sandra
Squier.
“It had hypothermia and barely
survived after we were forced to uplift
it. This goat was on death’s door,
but we managed to thaw it out and
have found a lovely family to look
after it.”
Mrs Squier says, like any other animal,
goats need shelter from weather,
clean water and adequate food.
She says some people seem to think
because goats survive in the wild
they can be tied up with nothing to
live on.
However, wild goats always seek
shelter in poor weather and are free
to forage for food.
“People often get a goat as a lawnmower,
tie it up and never give it
another thought,” she says.
“But they are living creatures and
we are not going to tolerate owners
who have no respect for these poor
animals.
“Goats are sentient creatures who
deserve better.”
